What is the purpose of Fire Doors within a Building?

Fire doors have two main functions:

  • To stop the spread of a fire when closed.
  • To provide a clear exit route when open.

How often should Fire Doors be inspected?

Fire doors should be inspected at least once every 3 months but many companies inspect fire doors as part of their monthly fire and life safety inspection programs.

What checks should be performed when inspecting a Fire Door?

  • Labels are clearly visible and legible.
  • No open holes or breaks exist in surfaces of either the door or frame.
  • Glazing, vision light frames, and glazing beads are intact and securely fastened in place, if so equipped.
  • The door, frame, hinges, hardware, and non-combustible threshold are secured, aligned, and in working order with no visible signs of damage.
  • Parts are not missing or broken.
  • Door clearances are within required specifications.
  • Self-closing devices are operational.
  • Door coordinator (if installed) functions correctly. The inactive leaf closes before the active leaf.
  • Latching hardware secures the door when it is closed.
  • Auxiliary hardware does not interfere with door or frame.
  • Field modifications have not been made that void the label.
  • Gasketing and seals are in place, where required.
